Pakistan Research Area
Pakistan is a key regional player and in recent years has become a frontline state against the forces of global terrorism. The wellbeing of Asia is inextricably linked to Pakistan and consequently the country needs constant monitoring. Our Pakistan desk observes developments in that country.

Pakistan Country Profile
The second largest country in South Asia and a major rival to India. Pakistan is characterised by a vigorous people and a determined leadership. Despite many inherent shortcomings, the country has been able to carve a position of influence and power for itself not just in South Asia but also in the Middle East and Central Asia. Negatives include a very limited form of democracy with a powerful military controlling many critical aspects of national life, the resurgence of fundamentalist Islam and the tendency for government agencies to harbour extra-territorial ambitions. See Country Profile.
