Visiting Scholar 2005: Ethan Beck, United States
Ethan BeckA native of Atlanta, Georgia, Ethan attended the University of Georgia, graduating with honors in International Affairs. During his tenure at UGA, he worked for the Center for International Trade and Security, a security-related think tank, as well as getting involved in many sports and organizations. Other than gaining valuable experience in US foreign policy and WMD proliferation, he was able to participate in a closed series of lectures and exercises, called the Security Leadership Practicum, given by officials from the US State Department, Department of Homeland Security, GEMA, and civilian experts on terrorism, WMDs, and foreign relations. Seeking to supplement his education with a diverse experience, he found SAPRA an interesting opportunity: "It's important to understand international perceptions and views--they usually differ from our own and can show us a thing or two we didn't catch from our side of the pond." During his stint in India, the SAPRA India Foundation funded his visits to the states of Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh. Ethan's interests are in US foreign policy and international security, specifically terrorism and strategic relations. After attending graduate school this fall, he hopes to join the US government in a capacity where he can employ the knowledge gained here. While here, Ethan wrote a paper on India's internal security problems.
